On Second Watch... A Movie Nostalgia Podcast

ree

In my last post, I had some open questions that needed to be firmed up. One of those I'm happy to announce is the name of our podcast. It will be affectionately known as "On Second Watch". A bit of a play on words from the phrase "on second thought" as this summarizes the fact that we'll be watching movies that we're nostalgic about from an older, or dare I say, more "mature" point-of-view...

We're going to have a lot of fun with this podcast I think. In my head, we'll each rate the movie based on our recollection of how great or terrible it was. Then we'll watch it again as a group and reflect on what we saw and experienced. We'll laugh about how ridiculous a plot is, or how the movie could not be made today for various reasons. We'll keep track of everyone's ratings before and after we watch the movie to try to come up with our ultimate list of movies.

What will make this podcast even better is the listener interaction. We want YOU to tell us what epic movie to watch from the 80s and 90s. We might make an exception for a movie in the 2000s since we're about to limp into 2020 as a group in our mid 30s. What I envision is allowing listeners to vote on which movies we should tackle next. We might organize a small list of movies from a genre, a specific actor, director, etc.

I was thinking more about the format of the show and I think I have a better approach. I want to keep each episode at about an hour, so we will spend the first 15-20 minutes or so discussing what recall about the movie, then 45 minutes of our reaction post-viewing. We will likely also record us watching the movie together for in the moment commentary that we will not bundle with our episode, but likely will publish as a bonus.

I have a few more ideas that I need to iterate on before announcing, but we have a lot of fun scheduled. I hope you'll tune in and enjoy our commentary on nostalgia and arguably the greatest decades of cinema and storytelling!

More to come, stay tuned.
